If your buddy has collision insurance, his. If you also have insurance it's possible that your collision coverage may address the damage if he does not have collision coverage.

Legal liability can differ from how the policies react. Your friend could always hold you responsible as the intention was that you'd return the vehicle in the same condition as when it was borrowed. So he could file suit against you directly. If he'd win would be determined by the court system.

But again, insurance wise, he's own collision would apply as primary. His insurance would not come after you as your an insured under his policy (permissive user). So if they came after you, they'd need to provide you liability insurance under their policy, as an insured, and defend you against themselves.

IN my experience these things would out good if your buddy has collision coverage, files a claim and you offer to pay him his deductible amount.
