do you have to salvage a retained vehicle?

I retained my truck from the insurance company. they paid me out the value of my truck minus the salvage value. Now that it is in my possession but is barley damaged, do I have to Salvage the title in CA?

I believe there is a process you must go through when you keep a vehicle that was totaled. You will have to make the repairs and show that they were made and I believe have the vehicle inspected by a garage. This shows that the repairs made the vehicle safe to drive. You then should be able to get a R-title from your state. There are probaly alot more things to this and others will answer with more details. Just remember once a vehicle gets a R-title and is involved in a wreck again you will recieve less money for it since it would have a reconstructed title.

If you are intending to repair the car and bring it back to road, you would require the 'revived salvage' certificate on it. But getting the car back on road is not an easy deal. You'd be required to obtain the clearance from the CA Highway Patrol or the State DMV before you can actually drive it again.

Most likely you need to contact the CA Dept of Motor vehicles.

Most likely you would face problem with insuring the truck as well. Some insurers may not insure reconstructed vehicles. Hence, it'd be wise to evaluate this aspect as well before you decide about the truck.
