I'd like to know about the differences between collision and comprehensive insurance.

Collision is a collision of the insured vehicle with anything except an animal (people are animals as well)...Comp is a named peril coverage, but basically is anything other than a collision except excluded things...comp covers, hail, fire, theft, vandalism, impact with an animal etc.

I've read somewhere that if I hit a tree in order to save an animal then it would come under collision. Again, if I hit an animal in order to save me from hitting a wall it would come under comp. Is it true? Please share your views.

Well I don't have a view...it's what the coverage provides...Typcially comp losses are not 'chargeable' meaning there will be no rate up...Now, a lot of people know and understand this...So knowing this..if I'm drive drunk, or simply not paying attention, and smack a tree, wall, ditch, parked car, and then could get it covered under comp by saying, "I swerved to miss a deer"...don't you think that ALL one vehicle accidents would have the same facts of loss? WinkLaughing Of course they would...

So to review, if you swerve and MISS the animal, but hit something else, it's collision and chargeable. If you hit the animal, it's comp. Even if you hit the animal and THEN hit six parked cars..it's comp..

It's good to know that comp losses don't inflict a rate hike...but does it mean that such a potential accident (hitting an animal followed by six cars) wouldn't still fetch me a rate up?

In the event you'd need to file a claim on the insurance you will need to bear a deductible. This amount is supposed to get deducted out of the payout towards fixing your car. Thus, you could save money in terms of your comp and collision deductible if you raise the deductible.

LaughingLaughing That's a good question...I'd say it ''shouldn't'' because the proximent cause was the deer...

Collision coverage pays for damage to your car is involved in a collision with another vehicle. It pays for repairs to your vehicle minus the deductible you have chosen. If you use an older car, you need not carry this insurance as the coverage is usually limited to the value of the car. But if you have a vehicle loan the lender may insist on carrying this coverage.

Comprehensive coverage protects the motoristÂ’s vehicle for losses due to reasons other than collision such as theft, fire, flood, animals or vandalism. Though this is not required by the states and is optional, if you have a vehicle loan the lender will require you to have this coverage.

It doesn't NOT have to be a collision with another vehicle...If you lose control and go off road, hit a sign, etc..collision.
