I plan on taking my dad's car to Edmonton (3000 kilometers away), and he will still be the policyholder on the insurance for the car, but I will be the primary driver... will insurance companies not like this? _________________ Register Now to have your Insurance queries solved. |

| Are you listed on the policy as a driver? You should call them and let them know where the vehicle will be "garaged". |

Hi Fizz,
I think you should have a chat with the insurance agent first. Though most of the policies would extend coverage across the states but it's always better to be sure beforehand than facing problems later on. |

Hi fizzbitch,
Insurance companies don't usually object to such things if done in a proper way.
Did you consult with your Dad regarding this? What's his opinion?

Hello,
Your situation occurs often when a policy owner's child attends college in a state/province differing from the owner's permanent place of residence. If your father's insurer cannot insure across provinces on the existing policy, they may have a provision by which a companion policy could be created for the vehicle. This companion policy would be attached to the main policy under which your father's other vehicle(s) are insured.
Hope this informatio is helpful. |

Companion policy...hmmm.
Sunshine, would you please explain bit more about companion policy?
- Would it require the policy holder to pay additional premium?
- Who would be the named insured? |

Would this companion policy be governed by the rules laid by the other state?
Or is it that both policies would have similar clauses?

Hi Steven,
Don't think my previous reply went through so answering again. My primary policy was MO and my companion was VA -- probably wouldn't be a need for separate policy if could be insured any differently.
Hope this is what you were getting at. |

Hi Sunshine,
What was your companion policy limit? Did it had the limit of MO or VA? |

Did they offer you separate paper works for the companion policy?
Or is it that they updated the main policy clauses and made provisions for the companion?

Kelvin,
Only difference was by election -- I didn't have comp/collision on my the beater that my kid drove
I do think the MO vehicle was not included for stacking purposes though but I can't remember for certain (I'm not in the situation any no longer). |

All policys must conform to the statute of the state they are in...so if (as an example) VA doesn't require UM, MO however does...also she would have to have the min. required by that state.. _________________ **************************************

Hi Steven,
Had separate paperwork, policy number, the whole shooting match was separate. However, I did get to keep the roadside assistance on kid's vehicle even though did not have a vehicle insured with full coverage on same policy (think I mentioned previously that no comp/coll. on his vehicle). |

@Kelvin
About the limits for MO or VA -- I'm unsure because I had much higher than state mims. for both.
@Steven
Companion policy/dec. page came with VA policy book and my original policy came with MO policy book. |
