My daughter did live with me, she moved out has a car but just told me she is cancelling her insurance. she still has my address on her DL. She is only 20 can I be held responsible for her if she drives?

Is the car in your name? If the car is not in your name, then it really doesn't matter what address is on her license. YOU are not responsible for her. She is 20, and is supposed to be an adult (and at least legally she is).

It is an incredibly bad idea to drive without insurance, but if something happens you cannot be held responsible.

Hi,

As her parent you may just explain the importance of insurance to her. Since she's an adult and has moved out it's not in your hands to guide her anymore. See if you'd like to request her to carry the state minimum atleast. May I know which state she's in?

I guess she is no longer driving the car as well. Has she obtained insurance where she has moved? If not you better pursue her to get coverage immediately. At her age rates are already up and driving without coverage may even cause her trouble in getting one in the future as well.

Is the title solely on her name, or you too are there as a co-signer?

If your name is NOT on the Title or the Insurance of the car, then you have nothing to worrry about. If she is driving without Insurance, she CAN get ALOT fines, etc. Possibly lose her DL........this depends on what state she is in. Gosh!! .....it's a GOOD idea to get Liability, at least.

She does live in NJ. She has been avoiding our calls so Iam not sure if she did cancel the ins yet or not. The car and ins are in her name solely. Other than our address which is on both items we are at a loss as to what she is doing. I just want to make sure at this point that we are not liable for her "GRAND Decisions"!!! Sad

That's one good new for you...and since in most states the insurance follows the car, you'll not be responsible for the damages caused by her.

However, I'd still look more into the laws of NJ to make sure that you have nothing to worry about.

Take care!

Hopefully...she makes the RIGHT decision and NOT cancel the Insurance she has. However.....if she DOES cancel it, and something happens, then I hope she learns a lesson from it.

You can if the car is in your name. I would notify your agent and let them know the situation to be on the safe side. I know you wouldn't face all liability since she is 20.

I think the OP said the car wasn't in her name ( or did I miss something?). I hope you get ahold of her soon, OP. If your daughter DOES cancel, there isn't alot you can do.

As she is adult no need to concern about her DL.I think the decesion of not cancellation of insurance was right, you should appriciate her for that
