Why would one need insurance prior to the license?

Which state are you from, Travis?

Dear Travis,

I guess you need a driving license in order to drive a vehicle irrespective of whether you're the owner of the vehicle or not.
Did anyone tell you that you need to get non-owner insurance in order to obtain a driving license?

Hi Travis,

You can apply for a non-owners policy to get yor license back, here are a couple of thing to consider, if nobody has told you this yet:

A non-owners policy only covers the another drivers vehicle and occupants if you are in an accident. The policy does not cover your vehicle or you, so if you are hurt or your vehicle is damaged or totaled, you are out the cost of the vehicle and any of your own medical expenses.

Sr22, I was not sure whether the OP wants his licensed back or wish to apply for one, but I think you could be right since you wouldn't need insurance prior to get license. Have you come across any such incident?

Hi SR22insurance,

I've heard that a non-owner policy is a secondary policy for the owner's insurance.

Does it mean that the non-owner policy would only come into effect once the car is already insured by the owner?

MY SON IS SIXTEEN WITH NO DRIVERS LICENSE. HE GOT PULLED OVER IN A TRUCK THAT DIDN'T BELONG TO HIM. WHEN HE WENT TO COURT THE JUDGE POSTPONED HIS COURT DATE. HE TOLD HIM TO GO AND GET NON OWNERS AUTO INSURANCE. THAT WAY WHEN HE GOES BACK TO COURT THE STATE WILL NOT KEEP HIM FROM GETTING HIS LICENSE BECAUSE HE HAS INSURANCE. WE LIVE IN TN. PLEASE HELP,
HIS MOM MISTY

I'm not sure what help you are looking for. Are you looking to obtain a non-owners policy? If so, you need to start calling agents to see if they can obtain this coverage for you.

However, I don't think anyone is going to write this policy (and I don't know why a judge would give this information) as.... _your son cannot legally drive_! No carrier should write a auto policy for someone who cannot legally drive! Not only are they insuring someone for something that should never happen but they could not rate the policy for someone who should never be in an accident (they use someone's drivers license info to determine what the rates should be).

Does he have a learners permit? If so, you should be able to add him onto your policy or confirm that he's covered under your policy and show this information to the judge.

Non-owners car insurance provides protection to those who do not possess ownership to cars they drive. But your son did not have the insurance coverage when he got into the accident and now he is under legal obligation. You need legal assistance.

First of all her son wasn't in a wreck he was pulled over...secondly insurance stays with the vehicle...so the truck that didn't belong to him that he was driving, should've been insured, and would've likely covered your son (assuming he had premission to drive it) had he been in an accident..

Tcope is correct (as always  ) he can't get ANY insurance without a license or permit...Contact your agent, and/or any other agent/companies you chose and ask about getting this policy...and what is required to get it, (like a license maybe  )

You need legal assistance.

sounds to me like she got some legal advise from the judge!

I'd also wonder, how Jr. came to be driving this vehicle? Who owns the vehicle? and WHY did he get pulled over? What did he get a ticket for?
