What insurance does a non-car owner on active duty military need for the occasional driving of someone else's car (friend or family)?
My family may ship me a car cross country to use until I am deployed after schooling in 10 months . Should they keep ownership or must I take ownership?

I am in nuclear school for 10 more months. I occasionally drive a friend's car around the base or my parent's car when home on leave. Should/must I hold my own insurance?

My folks may ship a car cross country for me to use until I am deployed in December (cheaper than buying one here). Would it be best to keep the car in their name OR transfer the car into my name while I'm in S. Carolina?

KK, I combined your two threads and deleted one--lori

Normally a non-owners policy but in your case it will be a vehicle available for your regular use so you should insure it under a normal auto policy.

OP if mom and dad are the owners of the vehicle and have ins. on it now they should be able to just add you as a primary driver (you pay the difference maybe) if your carrier will allow this or may have to change the policy state, that's the way i would try first...should make your premiums less.

I'm bit confused, if he doesn't have the title will he be able to get a regular auto policy on the car, again, if the car belongs to the parent and he/she adds him as the driver, will the insurance cover him when he is away in another state?

It's possible the insurance will cover him in another state. I had an issue, like this before. I was a 'resident' of California, but, I was stationed ( in Active Army) in North Carolina. I was using a friends car and I she put my name on her policy temporarily. It din't matter ( Active Duty wise, anyway) where I was, I was still a 'resident' of CA.......but was on Active Duty other places.

Sure, mom and dad insured the vehicle with him as the primary driver...in the military when a soldier is stationed somewhere else he does not give up his resident status in his 'home' state, unless he choses to do so, ie moves there, intending to live there....same as a college student. (clearly not the SAME i didn't mean to infer they are anything alike, JUST about state of residence Smile )

If you do ever decide to make a transfer of ownership or buy a car you may want to check out the gieco discounts. I just recently found they had a discount for their active and non-active military customers. I thought that was pretty cool.

Yeah...you're right. A few more Insurance companies are doing that now. Nationwide Insurance JUST started that one, too.
