I live in California and had an accident when driving a rental car in California. The accident is a minor one and just scratched both of the cars involved. It is difficult to identify who shall be responsible. We just exchanged insurance information and drove away.

The problem is that the rental car was provided by my wife's company. When she rent this car, she asked whether I can drive this rental car and the rental agent told her that I am automatically covered. However, when we asked for her company business insurance coverage policy with the rental company, we were told that I am not allowed to drive this rental car. Although I have my auto-insurance, I do not know whether my auto insurance cover the rental car. In particular, I am not an eligible driver.

Could you please advise me
(i) How do I find out whether my auto insurance including rental policy?
(ii) How do I find out whether my auto insurance cover when I am not an eligible driver

I don't see a difference in "i" and "ii'....

How do you find out if your personal insurance will address the loss? You call them up and report the accident. I would agree that the coverage for you will probably come from your personal policy and not your wife's business policy.

If you were driving at the time of the accident, your carrier will look into the matter and let you know. They will need to obtain a copy of the rental contract. If there is damage to the rented vehicle then you should also report the accident to your wifes company so that their policy can also look into the loss.

I agree your wife needs to report it to her company, and their carrier, you need to report it to your personal auto policy carrier, and yes, all company's (that I've ever heard of ) have claims report lines that run 24/7/365....so give them a call, please do let us know the decision, and if we can help you in any way.

The auto policy normally extends coverage to any car driven by the policy holder, including the rental vehicle, but may require the policy holder's name in the rental document. However, you are required to find it out from your insurer.
