Lori,
Potentially couldn't everything she owns be at risk really, if there is not enough insurance to cover the claim a civil suit can be filed right? I am just thinking about a conversation that I had when shopping for insurance and the under insured driver, they told me that if there is not enough coverage in place that I could be sued and potentially lose more than a pay out on the insurance claim. |

What you are talking about is being Under insured (same as that allstate commerical)...there's a big difference in UNDER ins. and NON-insured. _________________ "Never, never be afraid to do what's right, especially if the well being of a person or animal is at stake. | I don't know..I would STILL be sceptical about putting the insurance in someone else's name, as a DRIVER of the car. Of course, ( as it was talked about earlier..) something could happen and the OP would be 'liable'. |

| Goes to show a person to make sure they have the right coverage limits. A civil suit usually doesn't happen to often from what I understand. They can file a suit but the chances of the person who was injured actually seeing the money is slim to none. I would just really think about how this could effect me before making a final decision. |

| There are people that don't care what kind of insurance they have, that is they would the least amount available. So if you are in an accident with them then you end up with the underinsured motorist who has nothing to compensate you on the civil end of things either. |

| I made sure that this was definately part of my new policy, I think I actually understand the terms of my policy this time, for the first time, thanks to this site, reading and learning enough to know that I needed to ask and request of the company. |

| Some people want to get the 'cheapest' insurance. If something DOES happen, and they don't have the 'amount' to cover damamges, injury, etc. , I'm sure it can cost a bundle!! A friend told me once that the "cheap can come out expensive." OHHH.......SO true!! |

| I felt bad for a lady that I met the other day, she came in with her daughter, her daughter and her were in a terrible accident, she had limited tort, she said her fiance paid out of pocket for most of her care, but her daughter was never really taken care of. The daughter is supposed to be taking medications that is around $300 a month, she has no coverage so she is not taking the medications. She is looking for a job with medical coverage. This limited tort accident has cost this family a lot, I think it was a lack of knowledge on their part that made them chose the cheaper insurance. Like you say, be cheap now pay more if something happens. |

| Maybe I need to 'brush up' on my car Insurance..LOL "tort": do you get this in 'Liability' coverage.or......'Full' coverage? Can someone explain what it is? I've HEARD of it, but..(forgive my 'lack of knowledge' here) don't know what it is. |

SD All states don't have this, I'm pretty sure PA does though...is that where you are? If you chose non-tort, your rates are going to be less but you give up the right to sue the party that injurys you...IMO I'd only do that if i were seriously on the edge (financially)...and change it back as soon as I could.. _________________ "Never, never be afraid to do what's right, especially if the well being of a person or animal is at stake. I would not advise it either SD. At one point we did not have full tort (years and years and YEARS ago) and I was in a wreck. I really wasn't hurt thankfully but I was not entilted to any money for pain and suffering. At the time it really wasn;t that big of a deal (they paid me waaayyy more than I paid for my car when I bought it). After that accident it made me think what could have happened. I changed to full tort. I really did not understand "tort" at the time. Blame it on my youth but I am glad I had it this time around.
Maybe I needed the little accident to open my eyes. |

| I have always kept full tort thanks to my parents preaching it all the time, however I do have other family members that carry the limited tort. I just want to fill protected in case something would happen. |

| With my company in NJ you have to disclose all drivers of your car on a regular basis and also disclose the location of the car at night if you are misrepresenting this to the insurance company you could be committing fraud. The fine is 5 grand, they can also refuse to pay the claim on the basis of him being an undisclosed driver. You probably signed something when you either added the car to the policy or initially took it out. Also if he were to be in an accident and he were hurt he would not have med coverage provided through your policy. Be careful I would definatly add him to your insurance policy. |
