Hi. Can my boyfriend be added to my car insurance policy as a driver? I live in NJ and have nj full insurance. He, however, lives in Pennsylvania with a Pennsylvania drivers liscense. However, he does borrow my car often which is why I am asking. He does not own a car or have any type of insurance at this time. If he cannot be added, is it still ok for him to drive my car?

I'm guessing he could be added but if he does not reside in your household. You probably don't want to add him. He'd still be considered an insured under your policy for the use of the vehicle. Granted, if he drives your vehicle a lot, the insurance company would probably want to collect a premium on him but I see no reason to pay the money. As far as your concerned, he only drives the vehicle on "rare occasions". :)

Though, you should consider increasing your liability limits if they are at the state minimum.

I am with t-scope on this one. Why pay the extra premium if you do not have to. Living in two different states he would appear to be a casual driver. If he is ever in an accident in your vehicle then you can just use this reason to show he only drove the vehicle every once in a while.

I'm assuming your boyfriend does NOT own a car...that right? I don't know why he could NOT be on the insurance, but, you may want to ask your Insurance Co just to make sure. You MAY have to pay a 'higher' payment...I don't know. I think your higher may depend on HIS driving record...(ie..DUI's, speeding tickets, etc.) Not saying he has these things, just saying there are factors.

I would let him get his own insurance, especially if it is just a boyfriend/girlfriend situation, these situations tend to get hairy at times. Will your insurance company be responsible if he is driving someone else vehicle and gets in an accident. Becareful with this one, you need to know what all is at stake here if the worst should happen. What if he is in an accident that is over your limits, then everything you own is at risk. At least that is the way that I understand things, some one please step in and correct me if I am wrong.

He'd have to get a non-owners policy as he does not own a vehicle. When he drive the OP's vehicle, her insurance would probably still be primary (depending on the state where the accident happened).

You can if you agree to pay higher premium rate for including him in your policy as an occasional. The occasional driver is the person who isn't the primary operator of the vehicle. However, as tcope has mentioned in his post, you may not wish to do so if he isn't residing with you. He anyways will be covered under your plan if he drives the vehicle with your permission.

Moreover, if he is quite regular in renting or borrowing cars he may obtain the non-owners insurance, which would cover him as well when he is driving your car.

Yeah, the vehicle insurance company normally extends the coverage to the driver driving the car with the owner's permission. You need to check whether it applies in your case as well. Just check with the coverage section of your plan or get it clarified from the agent.

Increasing the policy limit is another good idea, in fact its been suggested that one should carry coverage level over and above the state mandate since the medical expenses along with the property damage claims becoming expensive with each passing day. Hence, you need to have enough to cover you at the time of need.

I don't know......I STILL don't think it's a good idea. Not saying the boyfriend isn't a responsible person, but why have to worry about SOMEONE else driving your vehicle or OTHER things going wrong (ie..accident). If this was a family member, I would consider it. 'Blood is thicker than water', kind of thing. There has to be a REASON the boyfriend doesn't have a car or insurance.

I'm with t on this (again  )...if he drives it "occasionally" or ''rarely'' (those are KEY words) and does NOT live with you I'd not attempt to add him...now if you two do decide to 'shack up' totally different and you need to contact your company and add him that day...for now as a permissive driver he would be considered an 'insured driver' should he have an accident...but again as t said check your bi pd and um limits...what are they? what are both state limits? your vehicle will automatically confirm to the state laws the car drives into, but you are also adding risk to yourself, and for that reason alone, i would have higher liability limits (pd,bi and um)...let us know those limits and we can check the state limits for you.

ps..why doesn't he have his OWN car?

bodily injury is 250,000 each person 500,000 each accident property damage is 100,000. he had a car but had to get rid of it cuz it was giving him prolems...i was helping him out with this cuz he had past credit problems and for the moment this is cheaper with the car in my name...instead of him going and getting one to finance.we will be moving in together next year but not at the moment.
