Striking a pot hole is covered under the collision coverage in your auto policy. I don't know why they are investigating it so throughly, there is more to it, than meets the eye. You can clearly tell when inspecting a vehicle that the undercarriage (oil pan) had had an impact with concrete. So this must not be the trouble. More than likley they are concerned about your late report. When did you take out this policy? How long has it been in effect? This might be the issue, I doubt they disbelieve that you struck a pot hole.

Let us know the following:

When did this policy (with this company) go into effect?
When did you hit the pot hole?
When did you report it to the carrier?
Have you recently changed or added any coverages?
How long did you drive around after hitting the pot hole?
What state are you in?
What is the age, and mileage of your vehicle?
Have you had any similar claims in the past?

After answering these questions we'll be in a better position to try and help you figure out what they are looking for.
