Bodily injury liability provides coverage in case there is any bodily injury caused to a third party that has resulted from an accident that you were involved in. Medical bills and legal costs that are incurred will be covered by the bodily injury liability insurance.

Do you need bodily injury liability?
If you own a car, it is advisable that you have Bodily Injury (BI) coverage. Usually most of the states in the United States require you to have a minimal amount of bodily injury coverage. Medical costs arising from car accidents can be really expensive. It can be really heavy on your pockets if you have to make a one-time-payment. Again the legal fees too can be quite high if you are sued. The fact is that you can get sued even if the accident isn’t your fault. BI covers these too and regardless of who is at fault.

How much Bodily injury coverage should you purchase?
How much you must purchase depends totally on you and the carrier providing the coverage. Different carriers offer different coverage. If you purchase coverage for a smaller amount, you may be able to cover only one person or two. The larger the amount the more number of people you can afford. So, you must determine the number of people you would like your BI insurance to cover.

There are, however, carriers that offer a cap either per person or per accident as would suit the company policies. Hence, buy as much coverage that you think you can afford.

Be careful not to set too low limits for your bodily injury. This way, you can be sure that in case of a major accident, you can be adequately covered. If you are not adequately covered and the bodily injury that you cause exceeds the limits that you have, you will end up paying out-of-pocket. You must seek advice from a good agent in order to determine how much would be the right coverage for you.
