In America, the two most coveted and adored pets are cats and dogs. A survey in 2007-08 revealed that dog-owning households outnumbered those who owned cats. However, the total number of pet cats was much greater than that of dogs. Similar results appeared when the survey was again conducted in 2009-10.

On their 10th anniversary, Pets Best Insurance Services, LLC, a leading pet insurance agency based in Idaho, has released detailed information about the most common dogs and cats claims it has processed during the years.

Here are the 10 most common dog and cat insurance claims, which Pets Best concluded after processing more than 630,000 claims, covering 90,000 pets.

3. Osteoarthritis 10%
4. Undiagnosed mass 8%
5. Cruciate ligament injury 7%
6. Hypothyroidism 7%
7. Pyoderma 6%
8. Undiagnosed gastrointestinal condition 5%
9. Undiagnosed lameness 5%
10. Urinary tract infection 5%


During the last 10 years, Pets Best received more than 40,000 claims for atopy/allergy and the biggest claim they paid was $4,936. While, with nearly 10,000 claims for ligament injuries, the highest paid amount was $6,542.
