What sort of policies should I look at for my new business?

At a minimum, look at General liability – to cover liability risks that can happen due to your operations or on your premises. Workers Compensation insurance covers injuries to your employees.

I would recommend looking at Workers Compensation to cover yourself, even if you do not have employees. Most health insurance policies exclude injuries sustained during the course of employment.

If you will be driving an automobile on behalf of the business, you will want to look into a Business Auto policy.

A Business Owners Policy is designed for small businesses. It can provide coverage for your property and liability.

A far better choice would be an "occupational" disability income policy. It provides protection for total disability from injuries or illnesses that occur on or off the job.

Workers' Comp will only cover those things that occur in the course of employment, or arise out of employment. If it happens off the job, there is no coverage. By itself, WC is inadequate for most business owners.

Most health insurance policies exclude injuries sustained during the course of employment.

This is only true if the claim is covered by WC. But the real issue is not so much the medical claims, it is the loss of income due to total disability. Medical insurance does not address that.

Exactly, individual disability insurance is far more usefull than workers compensation insurance. All business owners should have it.

Hey guys,

I think Liability Insurance is best for business. Liability insurance insures against liability legally imposed upon your business because of the negligence of the business or its employees. Put another way, it protects your business when the business is sued for negligence.

Shameless plagiarism from another post elsewhere in the forum.

You can purchase business insurance for nearly every operation and risk your business faces. In fact, with so many options available, it is hard to determine what type of coverage you need.
