Our business vehicles are often used to carry products and equipments. They are also used to take our employees to distant locations with adverse road conditions. Would it be beneficial if we apply for business auto insurance?

It's really a must have. I'd highly recommend that you site down with a local commercial agent to discuss your needs. They can be quite complex (Inland Marine policy for tools and items being transported, etc).

Does that mean a single IM policy may not always cover transporting both tools as well as employees together?
Also let me know if it's too costly to have such coverage for a business like ours'.

How would the transportation of an employee need coverage? IM policies cover specified items and items while they are away from your business.

I can't tell you 1) what is "too costly" or 2) what a cost is as I'm not a local agent and I have no idea what your business is. See my first post.

Well, it covers the drivers and their vehicles for commercial purpose. It's a real good option since your personal auto insurance policy won't cover your vehicle for any commercial use. So, if you're gonna use your personal vehicle for business then there are real chances that you'd stand uninsured in the event of an accident.

Certain businesses would deliver or haul others' equipments or may even use rental equipments belonging to others. If your business falls into that category, you'd need to adhere to state and federal regulatory norms which are applicable to vehicle operations.

Business auto insurance may cover your drivers and the company vehicles, but when it comes to mobile equipments e.g. tractors or bulldozers you'd need to obtain some coverage towards the damages caused by such equipments. I guess it also applies for the pollution caused by your company vehicles.

You'd need to follow certain steps in order to lower your insurance costs. Be sure of the qualification and the driving history while you're about to appoint a driver. Check if your business would allow you to pick a higher deductible, so that you may enjoy a lower premium.

There are a couple of other factors that might affect your insurance premiums too. The locality from where your business operates affects your insurance cost to a great extent.
Apart from this, the kind of vehicle that you use may affect your premiums. Also make sure that you have the burglary alarm and other safety and security devices installed in your car.

Some times equipments are leased to the business through a leasing company. Under such circumstances, the leasing co. is the titled vehicle owner. It's a popular misconception to identify the main business as the titled owner rather than the leasing co. So, it's very important to know and remember who the titled vehicle owner is.
