I have a neighbor with HIV who cannot seem to find any health insurance. Any help is greatly appreciated. We are in the Los Angeles area. Thanks.

I think you'd most probably need to look for some specialist cover on this one. there probably are insurer who will work with you but they will be niche operators.

You could look at contacting HIV or AIDS advisory/advocacy groups, though I did a quick google search and turned up a few results that might be useful to you. I won't post up the links (breach of TOS) but there is info out there.

A friend of mine had HIV (died about 4-5 years ago..was only 36). He DID have Health Insurance, but, he obtained it from a 'Aids Alliance Group' type of thing. However...the premiums he was paying were higher than 'normal'. Thsi was in the state of PA.

Health insurance companies generally discriminate against those with HIV. Most of the time they increase the premium or reduce coverage in the policy. The easiest way to get a health insurance policy would be taking a group policy. If your are working for an employer with 15 or more employees at present, you have the right to the same insurance coverage provided to the other employees under the Federal law. If you are unable to work due to your present health conditions or is between employers make sure you use COBRA effectively. You can seek health coverage through state government or through an agency which provides Universal health coverage. However, you might face problems if you are an individual purchaser due to the social discrimination.

I think a medical coverage through a group plan can work as there is no disclosure of conditions nor exclusion thereof.
