I am wondering how many are purchasing or looking to purchase indemnity polices or policies that pay directly to you instead of major hospitalization because of the cost associated with individual care? For instance a cancer policy, hospital indemnity plan, Critical Illness policy, Accident policy, etc.

The way I understand an indemnity plan, is that it gives one the freedom to choose one’s health care provider. Though it can be costlier compared to HMOs and PPOs, it does not have the restrictions of network doctors and hospitals.
Though deductibles and co-payments are involved in indemnity policies; they may be less expensive compared to the comprehensive individual policies.

I would like to know more about the benefits or the negative aspects of the above mentioned various policies. Any expert views will be much appreciated.
