Wind or windstorm insurance is for the homeowners who reside in hurricane prone areas.

Though wind is generally covered in a standard home policy. Many home insurance may not cover damage caused by storms in a high risk area, here wind insurance proves to be useful.

Windstorm insurance may cover damages to the house resulted from high winds, hail, rain, tornadoes, cyclones, etc.

Basic home insurance covers damage from wind - but in areas that are prone to extensive and recurring damage I've seen insurance policies that charge significantly more if they want protections from windstorms.

There are also state sponsored wind insurance pools for companies who can't afford private insurance.

Wind insurance is really necessary if you reside in a hurricane prone area, where there is considerable amount of storm inflicted damage. It is wise to protect yourself with a proper insurance.
