Do general health insurance plans also cover eye doctor visits, or is that a separate plan? Any response would be appreciated.

It completely depends on the terms of your health insurance policy. In general, health insurance compensates for medical treatments. So if you are consulting an ophthalmologist for glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, detached retina, or other medical conditions, the medical insurance should cover the bills. However, the regular “eye exams” are not covered.

What wasn't mentioned is that there are stand-alone plans for vision care, such as Medical Eye Services and VSP. These are usually provided through employment, but can be obtained on an individual basis.
