What are my chances of getting a health insurance coverage?

Unfortunately I tore my anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) yesterday while playing with my skateboard over a railing. You can understand that I didn’t do that intentionally. It’s hurting too much and I’m bedridden since then. The doctor came over here and asked to do the surgery asap. I don’t have any health insurance. Can I get one now and proceed for the surgery?

In other words, you are just trying to buy auto insurance to cover an accident that occurred last month. You can certainly have a health insurance policy now, but it won’t cover the ACL surgery.

There is no way that you can get an insurance this year to cover your surgery. If you don't have any insurance now and didn't had it since the past 63 days and if you get coverage now, then it would not cover those that are already wrong with your health for more or less 6 - 18 months. During this period, it'll only cover those that you first began to need after getting an insurance.

So, if you need to undergo a surgery right now, then you'll have to bear its costs out of your own pocket and there will be no insurance for you. This is because you did no have any insurance to cover this injury, before it actually occurred.

If the OP's income is sufficiently low, he will qualify for Medicaid and that will cover his cost of surgery.

Alternatively, he can simply walk (or hobble) into any emergency room in America, and he must be treated without charge in the ER -- that's been the law in America since 1996 (known as "EMTALA") (he will be billed for the visit, but with no money, what will the hospital collect?), and if it is serious enough to require surgery, he might even find a surgeon willing to operate at no cost.

Go to the hospital, young man. They will work to qualify you for Medicaid. Choose a charity/non-profit hospital (one run by a religious denomination -- the word SAINT or the name of a religion you recognize is usually in the name of the hospital -- you don't have to be a member of that religion), where they will provide treatment and ask for money later or not at all.

I don't think a or more years has anything to do with this...The truth is that you cannot cover a loss with a policy that came into effect after the incident.

The truth is Medicaid can and does pay new claims up to three months after they were incurred by a person who was not enrolled in Medicaid at the time. It also covers preexisting conditions, as all nongrandfathered health plans in America will be required to do begi 1-1-2014.
