Is it true that by 2014 all US citizens need to have insurance. Otherwise, they’d be penalized.

I am very destitute and i cannot afford insurance. Is there anyway by which I could stay away from Obamacare? Please help as I’m clueless.

The answer is, essentially, yes. Every person in America legally must have "minimum essential coverage" beginning January 1, 2014.

None of us can "stay away from Obamacare". If your income as a single person is below 133% (or 138% in some states) of the Federal Poverty Level (100% = $11,490, 133% = $15,282, 138% = $15,856), then you will qualify for Medicaid in your state of residence and can be automatically enrolled. If your household size is larger, the numbers are higher ($23,550 to $32,499 for a family of four, as an example). You can view a chart of the FPL numbers here: http://obamacarefacts.com/federal-poverty-level.php

Find a local insurance agent or certified enrollment counselor to assist you. Check the website for your state's health benefits exchange for more information.

As per the Affordable Healthcare Act, dubbed Obamacare, the federal government will provide subsidies against health insurance policies to those who can't afford the premiums. It is advisable not to enroll in any plans now since the state government "exchanges" are supposed to open online during late October and you will be able to see all the plans available to you, and the costs after subsidies. But as the Republicans are delaying it I don’t know what we are going to see. Anyway, at this moment you should be more concerned with the ‘Shutdown’.

In person, and verbal explanations are always more comprehensive than those written ones. Speak with an agent who works with all of the plans on the exchange in your state. The agent can explain it better to you.

Mango, Mango, Mango. How little you know, and how much it shows.

Premium tax credits have nothing to do with who can afford health insurance premiums. Only those whose household MAGI is at or below 400% of the Federal Poverty Level will qualify for such credits, and then only when they enroll through their state Exchange.

To view the 2013 FPL charts, visit http://www.medicaid.gov/Medicaid-CHIP-Program-Information/By-Topics/Eligibility/Eligibility.html and scroll about halfway down the page for a link to the PDF file "2013-Federal-Poverty-Level-Charts". Persons whose MAGI is below 133% (138% in certain states and the DC) will be enrolled in Medicaid if they apply for insurance through the Exchanges. Children whose parents' incomes are slightly more than the 133%-138% FPL will be enrolled in Medicaid when their parents apply for insurance through the Exchanges. Premium tax credits are not available to anyone who purchases insurance off the Exchange.

Actually, friend, yesterday was the Grand Opening across the country.

But as the Republicans are delaying it

The Republicans are not delaying anything. They are attempting to do what the majority of Americans really want -- terminate Obamacare and start over with something that will actually work. The insurance companies will cooperate in that, given the chance.

It actually might be a good thing for people to read all 900+ pages of this piece of junk . . . something your elected representatives did not do before they voted to pass it.

It's not only about 2014..we all should have insurance to secure our future.

Sorry, John, but this is not what insurance does. Never has, never will.

Insurance provides protection against losing the security of our future if we fail to get there due to the intervention of life.

Life insurance protects against not living long enough to amass the cash we hope the insurance company will provide if we die.

Health insurance protects what little savings we have from being depleted in the event of an illness or injury, or in the case of a pregnancy.

In neither of those situations does the insurance "secure our future."

To secure our future means having to actually go to work and do that for ourselves. No insurance company will do that for us. But some of us work for (or with) insurance companies that will help us get there by helping others protect what they have (or hope to have in the future).
