What is the difference between Medi-Cal and CMSP?

I’m 56 years old and living in Northern California. I’ve been using CMSP insurance through the county of Solano since long. Recently I received a letter where it was written that effective 1-2014, I’ll receive Medi-Cal instead of CMSP. Could anyone please let me know if there is any difference between the both? Thank you for your time.

MediCal is welfare - the California Medicaid program, run by the state. CMSP is a county run welfare program, focusing on providing health care to families living in the rural parts of the country.

I’ve had both and still have MediCal. Though I don’t live in a rural area, CMSP helped me some years back when I was disqualified for MediCal. It all depends as on how your county qualifies you and keeping what norms in mind. For more and detail information you should check both the sites of MediCal and CMSP.

There will be little need for CMSP in 2014 and beyond. The only persons who were eligible for CMSP through 2013 are Individuals ages 21 through 64 who reside in a participating county, have incomes at or below 200% of the federal poverty level (FPL), and who are not eligible for Medi-Cal benefits could be eligible for CMSP benefits.

Beginning in 2014, these persons are eligible for Cost-Sharing Reductions in health plans through the CoveredCA exchange (either Silver 94 or Silver 87 plans depending on whether income is below 150% FPL or below 200% FPL). Those benefits are generally more generous than what was available from Anthem Blue Cross under CMSP, and premiums will be rather small for the persons in those categories.

CMSP eligibility was also conditioned on a test of assets and income, which does not apply to Medi-Cal unless a person needs assistance with the cost of long-term care and is age 55 or older.
