What to do if I'm at fault?

I backed into an Acura -- totally my fault -- and bashed in the front quarter panel. I told the owner I would pay for the repair, figuring I was better of handling it that way than having her file a claim with my ins co, to avoid higher rates However, the estimate from the body shop (which I trust and have used in the past) came to more than I expected -- $970. So now I'm wondering if I should tell her to file a claim instead. If it makes any difference, I've not had any claims on my policy for at least 5 years. Anyone have any thoughts?

thanks,

Eric

Im sorry that, that happend to you Eric, at least you and everyone is alright...Unfortunatly when you submit a claim it will usually result in some type of increase in premium on your policy. Again every company is different and for this reason you may want to contact your agent. It is a good thing that you have not had a claim in 5 years as you will most likly not be dropped by your company from this but you will prob experience a rate increase. How much that increase is I can't tell you the companies rate on different things and depending on the amount of the claim etc. Some have a threshold that if it is below a certain amount they will not count it..etc. So speaking with your agent would help.

Another thing to do is when you policy renewal is issued, take a look at it and if it seems to high run your rates somewhere else and see if you can get something better. I also know that in my area there are a couple companies that are now offering accident forgivness meaning that they will wave your first accident if you are free of accidents for some time or if you pay a slightly higher premium, who knows your company may offer this, so I would talk to you agent and see what they say about your company before actually putting a claim into the company. I hope that this helps a little.
