is this my fault?

Hi, I was driving at or slightly below the speed limit on a particular road.

Just two days ago there was a big snow storm.

On this particular road, there was still a layer of snow and car has skid. It had hit the curb and the bumper got damaged.

I guess that since am going at safe speed and the car has got out of control; its not my fault.

I have comprehensive insurance on my car. Now will the insurance company buy this and not add points to my policy( I mean, increase the rate)?

Should I report this to cops?

Thanks for your help

Good morning timscott, and welcome to the community!

well, no that's not the way it's looked at honestly...Generally when there are hazardous road conditions and you lose control (slid) you are 'at fault'...the theory is that you are going too fast for the conditions...doesn't have anything to do with the posted speed...

I have comprehensive insurance on my car.

This is NOT a comprehensive loss honey, it's a COLLISION loss.....

Now will the insurance company buy this and not add points to my policy( I mean, increase the rate)?

Don't know for sure what you mean by points...but yes, more than likely this will be a 'chargeable' accident and your premium adjusted accordingly if it is over the payment thresold...most companies have a set amount let's say 500 and if a 'chargeable' accident results in them paying 500 or over it may trigger a rate increase. Or maybe you will just lose a safe driver discount if you have one...you could ask your agent or your companys policy services dept. You could ask your adjuster but they will more than likely refer you to policy services (that's what I do)...And before you ask, no you can't just pay the 'part' of the damage over the threshold (if 600 in damage then you pay 101 to avoid the rate increase) you have to pay all or none..

Should I report this to cops?

Ask your adjuster but no, I doubt it unless you damaged some other property or your company required reports on all accidents...but I'd say no need..

Thanks for your help

My pleasure sorry I couldn't tell you what you were wanting to hear though!

Let us know if we can be of any further assistance to you!

you've answered all my questions.

I do have a driver's discount. Hope the adjuster will just take away that.

I guess the front bumper is going to cost about $1200 for the whole repair. Since its more than their threshold; it should result in rate increase I guess.

It won't be the adjuster that does this I

however, in most companies they will be the one ''coding'' the accident...sorry...do let us know if can be of any further assistance to you......

Since its more than their threshold;

we don't know 'their'' thresold exactly right? (remember the 500 was an example) so if it's 1200 repair and you have a 500 deduct, and their threshold is 750...you're golden (sorry just trying)

it should result in rate increase I guess

more than likely since you have a safe drivers discount that will be all that you will lose from this loss...

Hope things work out in your favor, would they forgive it and not take away your safe driver discount if you only had this one accident and it is in the middle of winter?

This is company specific to Allstate however as Chuck mentioned all companies (well most) have some kind of little perks they offer that none other do..Progressive now is offering to replace your poor dead pooch if he gets killed in an auto accident! That coverage if free if you have collision coverage.....

Your old insurance cmapony is still responsible for the accident. Call the claims department back and fax or mail them all the court documents ASAP.If they do not respond, call the insurance commissioner in your state for help. Your old cmapony is still responsible.
