My daughter had this very thing happen, and we didn't even know it till she was buying a house! What we did was contact the credit bureau who explained to us to contact the insurance company we got certain documents (sorry I can't get too specific because I don't remember what they were  I think it had something to do with them explaining there was a delay in processing blah blah blah )...and furnished them to the credit bureau who eventually got this removed from her report....I would start there...and Good Luck!

In what type of case would this happen? Was the vehicle totalled out? and the loan being paid by the insurance company? Don't they usually pay pretty quickly on a totalled vehicle.

In my daughters case it was a health insurance problem...a hospital bill that hadn't been paid like five or more years ago! When I contacted the hospital (she was in college when this charge was incured and under her dad's policy and our dependent/responiblity) I ask why I hadn't heard about an outstanding bill..whay they hadn't turned us over to collection or sued...they had no answer, and they did have our (her parents) address and names as the responsible (for the bill) party..it was a crazy mess..
