Car insurance without drivers license would not help alone!

Hi There,

I was wondering what would happen if a driver, who had an expired license, got into an accident. (In California)

Would insurance cover the driver if it is not his/her fault? If it was his/her fault?

Would they be personally liable for any injuries of the other driver? What if the other driver sued them?

I suspect someone in my family is driving with car insurance without drivers license, and I am trying to do as much research into this as possible, to present to them exactly why they shouldn't be doing this.

Thanks for your help!

Good question. I have wondered about that. I know that in some states you have a grace period to renew your license after it has expired. I would think the insurance company would not be too happy about it. But there are a lot of smart people on here and you will get your answer.

Hi,

I could imagine your situation..it is not a good feeling when you find it happening within your own family.
Since you have mentioned about California, I could only say that in Cali it is illegal to drive with car insurance without drivers license. I found that there are no late feels towards renewal of your license but yes, you may well be caught up with the police if you possess an expired license. That might then turn up to be real problem for you. BlancardDerozio

Well, it depends a lot on the expiry period & the sort of vehicle that you drive.
I think you'd need to undergo the driving test once again if the expiry is for over a period of 2 years.

I feel you'd need to fill up a form: California Driver License Renewal By Mail Eligibility Information form (DL 410 FO) & with it you'd also need to attach the renewal fee check. You could know more about the process if you'd care to call 1-800-777-0133

the sort of vehicle that you drive.

How on earth would this make a difference?

Daughter, frankly if it was covered or not by the carriers I'd tell my wayward parent it wouldn't be just to get them in to get their license renewed! Little white lies (IMO) are ok, if they can aid in making things right! Not only is this risky and just plain irresponsible it's also a bad example .... Fortunately you are a smart young woman....tell mom or dad they will have no coverage if you think that will 'move ' them to the DMV!

Hi Lori,

I'm sure you'd be a much better person to explain it..but I've recently heard that some people in Cali are facing problems towards renewal of license if they have not disclosed facts about the kinda vehicle they are using, in case they are using them for commercial purposes.

Not really, ''Sonia" simply did not start a new thread, and dropped a question in on this one instead...close to them same topic, both asking about expired drivers licenses.
