Do I have to be appointed by a company to apply for and receive a Texas GLA license?

I don't think so. You need to sit for an exam I guess.

In Texas, one of the possible licenses is a General Lines Agent -- Life, Accident, Health, and HMO.

Texas has a prelicensing requirement, and you will have to take the required courses from a live classroom or online provider. Then you will have to take the license exam (computer-based). Your appointment as an insurance company agent happens AFTER you are licensed.

I do not believe you have to be sponsored by an insurance company to be licensed.
