You can submit an application to any insurance company on a COD basis for underwriting consideration. Obviously your diagnosis needs to be disclosed, but who knows, maybe there is an insurance company that has "caught up" with the current state of HIV/medicine. An independent agent working through an IMO/FMO will have access to private undewriters who may know of companies that would be favorable to your personal status, or make inquiries to see what their decision might be.

Honestly,

We all know that the life expectency has increased, while living with HIV is not the end of the world. Many insurance companies think it is :(
I would usually advise my clients if you are going to purchase life insurance purchase a small amount of insurance enough to cover the burial/ final expenses for the family. Next, take the extra money and obtain a retirement account such as 529 College savings plan if you have kids, Roth IRA, Annutiy. This allows your money to grow, however if death occurs before the funds have time to accumulate cash the family will not be left with a burden.

Now that's some mistake in describing a 529 plan . . .

. . . if you have kids, Roth IRA, Annutiy. This allows your money to grow, however if death occurs before the funds have time to accumulate cash the family will not be left with a burden.

Please explain what happens if the person puts a few thousand dollars into their Roth IRA or annuity and then dies, and how "the family will not be left with a burden."

Anytime agents commingle discussions of retirement plans with life insurance or, as in this case, attempt to equate retirement plans with life insurance payouts, the prospect with limited knowledge is at risk of being harmed.

Life insurance, annuities, and retirement plans are not the same things. Each product has a specific purpose, and some people need a combination of two or even all three to make sure their individual needs are being properly met.

There is no ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL product in this industry.

Max, hopefully that person was talking about only buying burial insurance because they were referring to someone who could not qualify for affordable life insurance. I don't know if that is the case. If it wasn't, I can completely agree with you.

There are a couple life insurance policies available for HIV + persons. There is a group life insurance policy where the only requirement is you work at least 20 hours per week and up to $100,000 is available with no waiting period and the orther is a 2 year graded benefit that only pays out for accidents not sicknesses the first year but only available to 40 and above. I am a licensed insurance agent in Missouri that specializes in Final Expense Insurance. First of all, there are a number insurance companies that will insure high risk at a reasonable premium. I offer a number of plans, mostly for the senior areas, specifically for people that are not able to buy insurance at a preferred or standard rate. All plans will be graded, or guaranteed issue for typical uninsurable diseases. None require any health questions or medical exams. The cost is very reasonable considering the risk the insurance companies are taking. These plans are all similar in that they give you 1st day coverage on accidents and either a 2 or 3 year waiting period on sickness. They all pay a full return of premiums to your beneficiary, tax free, if death occurs prior to the waiting period. Most insurance companies pay an extra 10 to 20% on premiums paid during the first 2 years, should someone pass. If you live over 24 months, the policy will pay the full Face amount you purchased. Typically, most uninsurable clients need 5 to 15k to handle their final expenses and that amount is not expensive, considering the problem. Think of it this way, if you don't have the money in place, or what you do have is earmarked to take care of your loved ones long term, what other choice do you have? So, what does it cost?

As, an example, I just helped a 64 year old female client obtain 5k for $31.00 per month. I hope this has helped those of you that thought there was no solution. If you have a question or require coverage, I would be happy to get you any additional information you require by emailing me at [email address deleted per TOU].

disclaimer...this is not an advertisement for insurance or a exact representation of what all insurance companies offer, it is only a response to concerned people who are looking for answers to a real problem on this forum.
