Your medical and daetnl expense on your itemized deduction schedule is reduced by 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. Your pretax health coverage through your employer is in effect 100% tax free(as if you deduct the full amount). Hence your tax savings will be greater through your employer provided plan even if you itemize on schedule A.

Not quite correct.

Medical, dental and other "unreimbursed" medical expenses are potentially tax deductible, when their total exceeds 7.5% of a person's Adjusted Gross Income (AGI)

Your income is not "reduced" by 7.5% of your AGI.

For example, let's say a person's AGI for a tax year is $100,000. 7.5% of that would be $7,500. If the person has, for example, $10,000 of medical, dental and other unreimbursed medical expenses. According to the rule, the person can now claim a $2,500 deduction on their federal taxes if they itemize.
