Hi Jocelyn, you should have checked it earlier. If the employer isn't offering the STD plan, you could have enrolled with a private coverage provider. However, most of the insurer will consider pregnancy as a pre-existing condition and hence you were required to sign-up for the plan before conceiving.

You may still enroll for a short term plan to cover future pregnancy and illnesses. However, your present condition and maternity leave will not be covered.

Short term disability policy will cover your future pregnancies, its complications and illnesses. However, STD benefits will not be available for normal child birth.

Here are few additional facts regarding the STD plan….

  • If you decide to pay for the STD plan with post tax dollars, the benefits that you may receive will be tax free.

  • You can't receive benefits under your fiancé's policy till you're married.

Honey, you should have considered enrolling yourself with the plan before getting pregnant. However, its always better late than never.

Jocelyn, not sure whether or not there is anything available at this time short of public assistance.

Are you covered by a major medical plan at work? If so, do you have maternity benefits included? If both of these are a "Yes", I would contact the health plan carrier and tell them that your doctor prescribed bed rest as part of your prenatal care and see if any benefits are available.

If the answer is "No", I just can't think of anything to help you.

It really is sad when something like this happens. It can rfeally add so much more stress to a pregnancy. I know a lot of people don't like to consider welfare but if its needed then you should go try to qualify. It will also give you good medical benefits since you are having a tough preganancy and pay the delivery. Hope you and your baby are getting better. Congradulations and Good luck.

hmm. you should have gotten yourself a STD policy before prenancy term, instead of letting the issue drag on. however, there are still some short term plans available. of course, these plans are less worthwhile and that they give less benefits. however, these are better than having nothing to cover you.

You didn't really mention it, but if you're worried about your job being kept for you...don't. You should be covered under FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) and your job should be safe. There are some public assistance programs, but most of them vary by state. The best thing to do when approaching the state programs is contact your county's social services division. They are familiar with all aspects of WIC, TANF, Medicaid, etc.

My best advice is to look up your states web site and see what all offers are there. Usually they will list any ongoing help programs and the guidelines (income) that come with it. You would be surprised how much help is out there if you look. It may not make up for your losses income wise but could help make the pregnancy a little less stressful. Good luck.
