Ticket received outside the home state.....

Hi friends, can anyone help me with my situation? I have just got a speeding ticket for driving over the speed limit outside my residential state. How is it going to affect my insurance points? Is earning points for faulty driving the same as the points the insurers give you?

All suggestions are appreciated.

Hi ÉlanMathew, receiving tickets for speeding may or may not influence your premium depending upon your state laws. Normally, the states report back any traffic rule violation by the out-of-state drivers to the motor vehicle department of their respective states. And depending upon your states specifications it may affect the cost of your auto insurance.

However, the state laws vary widely regarding this issue. Therefore, which may be a reportable violation in state A may not at-all affect the price of your insurance in state B ( your residential state). Some states don't even recognize the moving violations that had taken place outside state. In such case, it may not alter the cost of your policy. To find out more about it, you should enquire at the state DMV.

Hi Elan, nice to meet you. :)

I'm no expert but my understanding is that it doesn't make any difference if you get the ticket in your own state or outwith it. Your insurance company will probably find out about it even if you don't volunteer the information. I believe that some states contact the DMV of your home state to report your ticket if you get it when you're out-of-state.

It's very possible that they'll increase your premiums next time your policy comes up for renewal if not before because of the ticket.

Perhaps if you gave some more details of the circumstances such as where you were when it happened and your home state, it might be easier for some of our experts here to give you more specific information.

Which state are you from, buddy? and where the incident had taken place?

Let us know these details. We can then see if we can offer any more help.

However, the points on your license are not the same that your insurer awards you, but they are closely related. Accumulation on your points will increase your insurance points as well. The insurance points help the insurer to determine the cost of your auto policy. Therefore, more your insurance points, higher will be your premium.

Welcome to the community!

Let me put it this way...if you go to get a new policy with another company you will HAVE to disclose this ticket, and they will run an CLUE on your license and find out...You MIGHT get away with this one staying with the company you are with...here's why....when a company writes new business they always check the insured's license for violations...after they are insured they will periodically check them...how often? who knows, they all have different underwriting rules....so it's possible that this ticket could come and go before the next clue is run on you...for that reason alone (if it's not noticed) i would stay with your carrier until the time had elapsed (generally three years I think)...

one other thing I have to correct my dear friend lilac just a little...

It's very possible that they'll increase your premiums next time your policy comes up for renewal if not before because of the ticket

I know of no state that allows a rate increase mid-term...in other words they can't rate you up until you come up for renewal..so if you just paid your six month term yesterday, the EARLIEST they could increase your rates due to this ticket or any reason (across the board rate increases even) is six months from now...make sense?
