Hi
I am 29 and my husband is 35. My husband and I are planning a pregnancy in the next 1 year. I am employed but my pregnancy will not allow me to go to work after a few months. My company will grant me 3 months leave with full salary. If I am not able to go to office beyond that period what should I do? I do not want to go without money for long since we'll be having a child and taking care will need a lot of money. I do not have a disability insurance. Is it feasible that I get one now? I doubt any true disabilitly policy will cover pregnancy but it just might...and of course if you purchase any policy prior to becoming pregnant you would be covered,( assuming of course that is a covered disability)...

Well, this is gonna be my first kid and I want to be extremely careful. But I believe the docs ask you to stay back home towards the end of the last trimester (week 28 to 42). I'm not sure about that, but when my aunt had my neice, and many other moms that I know of were asked to stay under home care until delivery. But I'm really relieved to know that I will be covered. I think it must depend on the doctor. I had two children myself and the second one I worked up until the week before my due date. They cut my hours just to be considerate but that was their choice not mine. I have seen lots of people work up until the last couple weeks. I know its your first but if you are in good health things should be fine. If you want to have some extra money in case you don't get to work until delivery you can try saving some up out of each pay. Good luck.

I would think you would need health insurance. Does your company offer any? Disabilty insurance I would not think would cover pregnancy unless there was a good reason you could not work. Preganancy is not looked at as a disability.
Heather, if you are still on the planning stage and haven’t conceived yet, you may qualify for the disability plan. Insurers may consider pregnancy as a pre-existing condition which makes you uninsurable for that period. Some insurer may still offer you a policy but will not cover this pregnancy expenses.
Health insurance will cover the medical expenses for the child birth, but will not compensate you for the income loss during this period, disability insurance, on the other hand will cover your wage loss but will not provide coverage for the medical expenses that you’ll incur during child birth. IMO, you may need to consider both the options in order to fully sure.

I have a child, myself. I don't REALLY think you can 'predict' you will be on disability, while you are pregnant. Unless........(God Forbid) you have some kind of complicated pregnancy, and you STILL wouldn't know that until the time arises. Make sense?

I think this is where the previous comment came in at and Jeorge could be correct on this.
I would suggest, if you really think you might not be able to go to work after pregnancy, then get a short term disability insurance. This short term disability will begin the day your doctor certifies you unable to work due to pregnancy and will continue till your doctor determines that you can again return to work and can perform essentially as required by your job.
you guys it could be that whatever her job is (not the pregnancy) that she will not be able to work after that amount of time...if that's the case, not sure a disability policy would pay at all. _________________ **************************************
