Cut off Question

This was my first question to anyone that can help:

I recently transferred the title of my relative's car under my name. About a month and a half later, I got into a 3 car accident.

Now the insurance rep of my relative's insurance is wanting to investigate my coverage because of breach of contract and that he stated as soon as the title of the car changes then the insurance has to be changed as well.

The thing is that my relative already paid the premiums for the insurance to last until aug. 2008 and under his policy, i was listed as an authorized driver.

Because of the title change, is the insurance irrelevant even if I was considered an authorized driver? Someone please help. Thank you!

Good morning nixy23 and welcome..

This is correct, tranfer of the title is transfer of ownership...so of course they would want to be sure they even want to insure the 'new' owner...HOWEVER I think you'll be ok because you are a listed driver...the fact that the premuim was paid means nothing, they can reimburse that....I would plead ignorance, ('i didn't know i needed to change it since i was a listed driver blah blah') I doubt they will be able to deny the claim since you were a driver on the policy, (they agreed in effect to insure you driving the vehicle)....they will likely cancel the relatives policy however....

Hey, when you had changed the title, didn't you need to carry the signed-off title to the DMV ? If you'd done that then I think it is time & place of the transfer is registered over there. Now, you need to check if it is at all feasible to obtain a new proof of insurance card with your name exactly in place of your relative & mostly importantly get the coverage from the day of the title-shift. Please keep me informed!
