Are weight loss surgeries covered under health insurance? Are such policies expensive and hard to qualify for?

There are certain private insurance carriers who'd cover such weight loss surgeries. Such policies would very much depend on your state guidelines as well as your carrier norms.

It's important to know what's covered under such coverage. You may come across certain caveats. Some insurers would pay your entire bill, while some others may just cover 80% of it. Your must go through the paper work.

Medicare has announced that it will compensate only for 3 weight loss surgeries. I've come to know of 2 surgeries that could be covered under Medicare - The Roux-en-Y bypass & the Laparoscopic adjustable band for gastric patients.

If your primary care doctor suggests you to go through a weight loss surgery then he should back it up with medical documents. Such surgeries could be covered under policies offered by our private carriers.
