It depends on where you live and what type of benefits you would like.

Our most popular carriers are Anthem, Aenta and United Healthcare. With a five year old - you will want something offering well child care and vaccinations as well as a dr's office copay most likely.

Is there anything else that one needs to think of before picking an insurance service for his child?

I trust Aetna for the way they served my friend. But, which state are you in?

Wouldn't her eligibility depend on her age, medical condition and such? Can we just suggest her an average cost of health insurance?

It depends on where do you put up and how much are you willing to spend to buy health insurance online. If you stay in India than I will suggest Family health insurance from apollodkv health insurance company.

Still need more information - hard to answer generic questions like these without also being generic. That being said UHC, Aetna, and Anthem are usually good choices. But it is simply best to work with a broker and narrow down your options.

Hey Jose,

What would you suggest to our OP, SingleMom? What should she consider in a policy for better protection for herself and her child?

It would depend of the state that you live in. Different companies offer different health plans in different sates. In California right now your best options would be Blue Cross SmartSense plans and Kaiser health plans. Knowing that all you have to do is pick a plan that fits your needs and budget. Also don't be afraid of the deductibles. Most deductibles only apply if you are checked in, in to the hospital. All other medical expenses are covered before the deductible. Not all but most of the plans work that way.
