How long after the paperwork is filed, does it take to cancel?

Just stop paying your premiums, and you will be cancelled within about 20 days. No paperwork needed. But that won't necessarily make you eligible to enroll in another health plan.

I've been paying for our family dental plan through my employer, however, my husband's employer decided to add full coverage on dental as part of their benefit package at no cost to us. However, I cannot cancel our existing plan until next December. $840 down the drain on a policy that I cannot use. My husband's policy is a better policy as well. Evil or Very Mad

signed up for health insurance through health, gov; cant afford 5000.00 dollar deductable; decided to let it lapse and pay penalty to IRS. Now being threatened with collection agency for premiums-never advised in writing or verbally of any such fees, is this normal?

Yes, it has become a common tactic. You should have called the insurance company to cancel instead of just not paying the premium. It might not be enforceable in your state.

While you can cancel health insurance at anytime, I would wait until you've found a new health insurance company. If you're interested in the affordable care act, for example, you can only join at the beginning of the year. Other companies may put a premium on joining in June/July as opposed to January. Before you drop your insurance, you should research the application windows so you're never without coverage. If something goes wrong and you're not covered, a single trip to the hospital could bankrupt you.

This is overly broad and somewhat incorrect.

Anyone may enroll in health insurance -- on or off the exchange -- during the Annual Open Enrollment Period. For 2016, Open Enrollment begins November 1, and ends January 31. After this period closes, a person can still enroll if they have a life change event, but must do so within 60 days.

A person is only eligible for Premium Tax Credits to help pay some of the premium if they apply for insurance through their state/federal health benefits exchange. If a person is offered health insurance through their employer (or their spouse's employer), they are generally ineligible for Premium Tax Credits, but may still purchase health insurance through the exchange or elsewhere.

For more information, contact a local agent who markets health insurance.

I have an employee who signed up for medical benefits and know he wants to cancel the benefits to go on his wifes plan. Legally how many days does he have to cancel the policy?

I do not think it is a good idea to cancel your health insurance. If you want to cancel it, then you do not have to enroll again in the next open enrolment period. However, what would you do in the case of any unforeseen circumstances? You may regret your decision later. Maybe consider a short-term plan meanwhile so you can still have some coverage (though it won't cover pre-existing conditions)!

You can cancel your health insurance plan at any time, but if you cancel your policy outside of open enrollment and before securing new coverage, you won't be able to enroll in a new healthcare plan until the next open enrollment period rolls around.
