It is probably NOT possible to obtain health insurance for your wife as a dependent. If she was covered by the plan before you became eligible for Medicare, then she would have been eligible to continue that coverage under COBRA for up to 36 months.

But . . . here we are about to enter May. Your wife turns 65 in July. Even if her birthday is July 31, her Medicare coverage begins on July 1. You stated she already received the enrollment package from Social Security.

So I really don't see the benefit to your wife. Even if she could enroll in your employer's plan, her coverage might not even start before her Medicare coverage begins. An utter waste of time, money, and administrative expense on the part of your employer and its insurance company.

And before you or your wife consider a Medicare Supplement insurance plan, take a much closer look at Medicare Advantage plans where you live. Those will probably be FAR LESS EXPENSIVE and provide even greater benefits than Medicare combined with a Medicare Supplement.

I am 60 and live in NY State. Have been on disability since age 55, so I get SSDI and Medicare A & B. Other 20% covered by spouse's employer. A) will I have to get supplemental at age 65 even if spouse still working? (if he dies, I know that i will.B) Why do so many doctors and surgeons refuse to accept these medigag plans?

As long as you are covered as a dependent under a spouse's group health insurance, you should not need a Medicare Supplement insurance policy. And in the event you are no longer covered by your spouse's group insurance plan, I would recommend looking at Medicare Advantage plans (HMO/PPO substitutes for Parts A & B [you still have to pay the Part B premium]) instead of Medicare Supplements.

In many areas of the US, Medicare Advantage plans have no additional premiums, offer more substantial benefits than Original Medicare, and generally reduce out of pocket expenses, even if a monthly premium is paid to the MA plan.
