I hope that someone can help me out with this insurance problem. My husband is 52 5'6" weighs 185 he has high blood pressure, and has had for maybe 10 years, it has always been controled with medication. He goes up & down with his weight. I want to get health insurance for him, but he is considered a high risk, Aetna approved his application for PPO 1000 but increased the monthly rate from $381.00 to $572.00 per month, we can't afford to pay that, so I had to reapply for a plan with a higher deductible, I chose the PPO 5000 even if Aetna decided to double the price it would be $406.00 per month. I put on the application exactly what was on the last one that they approved, there are no health changes from July 2008 until I reapplied 11-25-2008. Sent it in online, a few days later, I checked for the status, and they declined his application. It's crazy... Last time, when approved, he was a "C" risk, this time a "D" risk. It's not fair. And now because he was declined, I can't find any decent health plan for high risk that we can afford. I am scared to get the guaranteed issued health plan. None of them are insurance companies that I have ever heard of. They are Freedom Solutions, Core, AIM. Please help me, if anyone has a solution. We live in Tennessee. Blue cross, is too much money for high risk. Thanks

frtwome, I assume your husband doesn't work? Do you? Is there a group plan where you or he work that surely would be cheaper right? Did he work or is he on disability? Anyway he can qualify for medicare or medicaid?

I'd suggest you to contact an independent agent or broker. And, as they're associated with multiple insurers they may be able to help you in finding a policy that would suit both your budget and needs. It may be difficult to get a health plan with a pre-existing condition, but it may not be impossible.

Private health policies are already overpriced. Hence, no wonder that you are charged exorbitant rates for the coverage. It'd be great if you can include him in your group health plan.

Health Insurance...........MY GOODNESS!! The way the premiums are so high, just makes you sick!! (No 'pun' intended). I've seen people PUTIING OFF Dr's visits, Emergency Room visits, etc. just because it's SOO expensive. I agree with FRTWOME. It's NOT fair how we are 'catagorized' in what we CAN and CAN'T have....health wise. It's really scary.

We are self employed, I know that finding a health insurance company to cover pre existing is pretty much impossible, I 'm not really trying to get him covered for the pre existing high blood pressure condition that he has. I'm just trying to find an insurance that will not consider him a high risk because of this problem. There not going to cover this problem anyway, so why not give him a normal rate on insurance, and just not cover the pre existing. But they don't do this, they give him a very high rate because they put him in the high risk price. Does anyone know anything about the guaranteed issued insurance? They do not ask for medical records. They quoted $359.00 per month. Core. AIM, Freedom Soluctions. in Tennessee.
Thanks to everyone for your help.

It's because this pre-existing high blood pressure isn't the only part of the problem, even if they deny hypertension, they can't deny everything that can come along with it..ie stroke, heart attack and the list goes on and on, that is why he would be high risk. All the ramification of the high blood pressure, not the high blood pressure it's self...certainly although it sucks you can understand where they are coming from on that point...

It's really sad to see people 'denied' by Health Insurance, especially when they REALLY need it (( those with pre-existing conditions..). A 'client' of mine DOES have alot of health problems...pre-existing stuff. He's tried everywhere he can go...either he will NOT be covered, or the premiums will be SOO high, that he can't afford it.

Sd, I think a simple logic applies to such situations….we only lend money to people who has the ability to re-pay it. I'm sure that you won't lend to someone who's destitute. The insurers too like to cover a relatively healthy person on the logic that he is likely to file lesser number of claims that one with an existing health problem. And, as Lori has mentioned that blood pressure can lead to many other health problems that the insurer won't be able to deny if has agreed to cover the medical issues of the insured. They may either deny the coverage altogether or may charge exorbitant rates for the coverage.

SIMON>................I DO see your point. I guess I can think of it THIS way.............if someone applies for a loan, and has bad credit, the lender will PROBABLY deny the loan because the 'consumer' is a 'high risk.' I work for a few 'clients' who actually had their insurance companies 'drop' them... Bad Health (MAJOR medical problems, etc.) and getting worse. The insurance companies probably don't want to take that chance, and I guess I can't blame them.

Well then, do any of you have a solution to the problem? What is a person suppose to do to get health insurance, if you have high blood pressure. Is there no one out there that has high blood pressure, that has received a health insurance plan after you have already been diagnosed with this condition. Help me out with this, please.
