They were put into place to garauntee coverage to those loosing employer group coverage after exhausting their cobra coverage.

This is really helpful to those who would otherwise due to existing health problems would have difficulty obtaining quality health insurance.

Quite true, HIPPA helps you to qualify for a health insurance policy with pre-existing conditions.

HIPAA works as a tool to ensure your insurability.

A traditional health insurance provider may deny you the coverage for the pre-existing conditions. HIPAA guarantees that the insurer can't practice discrimination against you (either in terms of higher premium or in terms of denying coverage) for the pre-existing health conditions.

HIPAA not only ensures insurability for persons with pre-existing medical conditions but it has many other benefits like , prevention of discrimination .Say in a group health plan you or your dependents may not be charged a higher premium because of any reason related to health status.HIPAA ensures renewability of insurance with minimal exceptions

hi.. do you mean to say that HIPAA only ensures prevention of discrimination towards premium worth? Or do you mean to say it has a lot to ease out the availability of policies? Please explain vividly!

I thought hippa covered privacy, so it must be that it is so much bigger than just privacy.

I just came across this discussion and thought I would clarify. Yes HIPAA does cover privacy, and yes HIPAA does provide guidelines for insurance companies to issue insurance. I have an attachment here which I hope will give you a better idea. Click on the attachment to be able to read it.
