Short-term health insurance bridge plans

I've heard that there exists a couple of health insurance bridge plans that help young graduates who're no more covered either under their college plans or under their parents' policies. Is it true? What sort of plans are these?

FOA, the policy is temporary. It's aimed to cover youngsters under an emergency situation. It's not meant to cover checkups.

I have this feeling as if our govt. was in a hurry to pass our reform bill.
I have reasons to believe that a period of 6 months is too less to incorporate such a bill within our economy. I haven't come across any good govt. plan that fills up the temp gap.

One of the primary concerns is whether you'd again be covered under your parents' policies now that you don't have it for summer (after the legislation comes into effect). I don't think it would be difficult to get back the same benefits for similar rates. UNC coverage doesn't cover you once you're a graduate.

You've just graduated from college or moved out on your own, and you're no longer covered under your parents' health insurance plan. Or perhaps you've flown the coop on your cubicle job and you're looking for the next big thing. Maybe you've found a new job, but your new employer's group health insurance plan won't kick in until you've been with the company for three months. These are good reasons to look into short-term health insurance if it's available in your state.

There is a lot of talk about Medicare Supplements these days. Some of the Medicare Supplements, often called Medigap, cover different things. Medigap Insurance Plans help the beneficiary to pay for those costs are not been included under the policy coverage of the original Medicare plans. In addition, Medicare Advantage covers a number of things that are not covered by basic plans.

Really? No! What was your first indication? The whole thing is a mess. Change things for 285,000,000 people or more, in order to cover an additional 17,000,000? What about the remaining 30,000,000 left behind? [[ Or did I reverse the numbers? The point is, they effectively wounded an entire functioning system, instead of simply concerning themselves with the 40-some million uninsured. ]]

Medicare Advantage covers a number of things that are not covered by basic plans.



Medicare Advantage plans substitute commercial HMO/PPO coverage for "Original Medicare" (Parts A & B) that Medicare Supplement insurance plans are designed to integrate with. Very different discussion. But they generally do provide more comprehensive health care for our seniors than the government's Original Medicare program.

I coming off COBRA coverage and of age to obtain Medicare bu ineligible to apply for part B until general enrollment period in Jan-Mar 2011. Even though my wife and I are over 65, I have heard there are bridge plans available to fill the gap. Do you have any information

Mr. Moore . . .

You are mistaken. You do not need a "bridge plan" at all. If your group coverage continuation under COBRA is ending, you will begin an automatic 8-month "SPECIAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD" and can enroll in Medicare Part B immediately! Your "creditable coverage" will entitle you to enroll in Part B and Part D plans without a premium penalty. You don't want to goof this up!!

You should visit your nearest Social Security office and enroll in Medicare Part B immediately. Once enrolled, your coverage will begin the first day of the following month. So guess what? If you go tomorrow, July 30, your coverage can begin on August 1.

Once enrolled in Part B, you are immediately eligible to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan if you are interested in HMO/PPO coverage instead of "Original Medicare" Parts A & B, plus a Part D prescription drug plan. Depending on where you reside, Medicare Advantage plans may be available, including the Part D PDP, at no additional cost.

If you are not interested in the added benefits of a Medicare Advantage plan, then you can stay with Original Medicare, but you'll have to purchase a separate Part D PDP, and you would be wise to investigate a Medicare Supplement plan to help you avoid the out-of-pocket expenses and other gaps in health care courtesy of Medicare.
