I've been advised to go for a cosmetic surgery. Are such surgeries covered under health insurance?

If elective, no, if medically necessary then yes, it should be...call your health provider and ask.

I'm sure your health insurer will demand all the medical documents that support such surgeries. Your doctor will probably need to certify the cause with all details.

If a cosmetic surgery is "reconstructive" in nature, then it will be covered under health insurance. The worth of such coverage will differ for each case.

Aren't tummy tucks covered? I'm sure, they're performed to keep our heart problems at bay!

Some group plans are much more lenient. If it's an individual plan, chances are you are not covered...unless mandated by your state.

"Tummy tucks" are not normally covered. They do nothing to resolve a heart problem. However, if an insurance company authorizes a bariatric procedure, they will almost always pay for one "tummy tuck" to deal with all that excess skin that won't go away on its own after about 6-9 months post-op.

Bariatric procedures are not covered by all policies. They may be covered as a medically-necessary (i.e., life-saving) procedure.
