Please let me know about Creditable coverage. At the same time, do let me know if VA health benefits could be termed as 'Creditable coverage' or not.

| I think the term creditable coverage is closely associated with health insurance. It's probably a health coverage that comes to you under individual or group health plans as well as programs that are sponsored by the govt. |

Veterans are required to pay a penalty if they'd be late while enrolling for Medicare - D following their VA health care enrollment. Creditable coverage will help them avoid such penalties.

In order to prove that you're enrolled in a health care plan meant for VAs, you'd need to show a letter from VA. This letter would show your enrollment date as well as consider VA enrollment as creditable coverage.

You have to be really careful here... HIPAAs creditable coverage does NOT apply to all situations! HIPAA applies to most medical expense plans, but does not apply to:
1. Plans with fewer than 2 participants
2. Government plans
3. Long-Term Care or Medicare Supplements
4. Limited dental or vision care insurance or specified/dread disease coverage.
5. Disability income or hospital indemnity insurance
6. Accident insurance; worker's comp; auto med pay or PIP
7. Credit-only insurance coverage

I get your point that HIPAA doesn't apply to specified/dread disease coverage. Would you show me any example of such type of specified disease coverage?

| INSTEACHER....so, VA is obviously considered a Gov coverage. Why wouldn't the HIPAA credible coverage? My dad had Medical coverage, through the VA. He's 79 years old. I'm not sure if he has any OTHER type of Insurance, however. I know with the VA, the 'Private policy' issue stands. OR........am I just misunderstanding your meaning, concerning this subject? |

Maybe I'm confused here...
Is the insured currently covered through the VA? If so, why would he be seeking outside coverage when the VA coverage doesn't cost anything (I think...).?
If it's the other way around, I don't think the VA requires anything like this... If he was covered by a private plan, he should still have access to the VA coverage.
I'm really confused.

Specified disease policies are exactly what they sound like; policies issued to cover specific diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, etc. They'll only pay if you contract that specified disease.

Rx creditable coverage applies to Rx coverage only, and not towards medical or other more comprehensive plans.
