My son (34) has collision and comprehensive coverage. Does he also need to have Personal injury protection? I guess it's not that necessary as he has health insurance to care of everything.

Depends on the state where the policy is issued. Each state has their own set of requirements.

tcope is right in saying that it's more about the state that you're in. If you're in a state wherein you need PIP, then I'll ask you a different question. Will health insurance cover your lost wages following an accident? I don't think it would. PIP covers you for your lost wages.

Aren't we guys forgetting the deductible?

Health insurance may have an expensive deductible. It's not the same with PIP. PIP has no deductible. It meets all possible medical costs within the limit of the policy.

It's a pretty good topic for discussion. Some of you who drive may have PIP. In that case, go through the monetary limits that have been offered to you. You must know if your limit is enough to cover your medical costs. Consult your agent if necessary.

PIP is sometimes beneficial to people who don't even have it. Suppose you're travelling in someone else's car which is covered by PIP and you get involved in an accident, you can simply make a medical claim for your injuries.

On the other hand, if you drive a car within a PIP mandated state, you should have no problem in receiving policy benefits worth the state minimum limit.

Wish everyone of us would carry PIP along with health insurance. It's worth a small price that you need to pay. PIP covers you under a variety of situations.
