My son would go to college as soon as the fall starts. I'm really concerned about what type of coverage we should provide him with. Please guide me! Caromel_marquez

Health should remain you major concern when he'll be away in college. Hence, you may arrange health coverage for him. If he is currently covered under your plan as a dependant, you may ask the agent whether he can still remain under the policy. At times the insurer may allow the dependant child to remain covered under his parent's health plan even when he is away from home.

The dependant child can enjoy the benefits of the coverage as long as he stays a full time student.

Well, this may not happen always. Some insurers may impose an age limit till when the child can remained covered under the plan, i.e. once the child attains the age, he/she may lose the coverage. Hence, it's important for you to find out the policy of your insure regarding this issue.

Most colleges and universities, however, have specially designed plans that allow the students to avail subsidized health care within the institutes. You may check out with this as well.

re: health coverage if you are in a group plan you probably still have coverage for him as long as he maintains full time student status...when our daughter was in college i had to prove this about every year. i get a form from the ins carrier requesting copies of schedules grades etc...

now, regarding other coverages they of course should have an auto policy with more than the min. liability limits if they have a vehicle...

not sure what type of coverage you are wondering about...if you could expand on that we might be of greater assistance..

I would assume her main concern is health insurance (since it's in the health forum) but your point if good Lori - just because he is off to college doesn't mean mom should disregard all insurance coverages.

As to the auto, you can keep him on your policy - just be sure and notify your agent that he is off to school. Definitely increase your limits of liability since he is driving (want to protect your assets and future, as well as his).

Also Rupert was correct about using the facilities at the university. Often times, they will give discounted (and sometimes free depending on the ailment) appointments and prescriptions. Check with the school.

Most or some I guess I should say HO policys specifically address a college students personal property while away at school....not sure that all do this could even be a company thing...I don't know, but it certainly pays to get these questions answered BEFORE you have a claim....(re:forum selection you have no idea the amt of time i spend just switching those around..sorry guess i've got into the habit of not believing it until i know for sure... Ahhhh....gotcha.

His property - should be covered under your HO.
His auto - depends on what policy he has; his own or yours. Either way he should be covered.
Health - addressed above.

But definitely what Lori said - first thing you do is call your agent and ask all the questions you need to ask. If you need any clarification, of course you can ask here.

A lot of colleges are now requiring health coverage for students, and there are a lot of cheap student plans out there. (I sell a few every fall)

Your best option may be to go ahead and get him his own individual policy.
It will be easier for him to have this if something happens major so that he doesn't have difficulty when he reaches the age limit of your policy.

In our case that would've been a waste of money...the kids are covered under their dad (my husbands) policy at work while full time students or until age 24...Then they get a job and have their own Wink

Thats how our insurance is too. Kids can stay on until 19 whether in school or not but after that if they aren't enrolled in an education program then they aren't covered. If they even wanted to go to school part time they will still cover but of course it has to be proven. My hubbys work calls this program "For a better tomorrow". It is something they came up with.

hi, i think that the most important one would be the health insurance. however, you must put in mind that an auto insurance would be rather important too, cos' since he's a college student, he would most likely be driving by now.
yea... so the two insurances are health and auto..
and already mentioned above, property insurance would already be under you..lol
