According to a study by the National Women's Law Center, a 25-year-old woman in the Lone Star State will pay as much as 22 percent more than men do when buying individual coverage if she is not covered under an employer's health plan. A 40-year-old woman will pay as much as 37 percent more.

"Women are being charged more, simply because they're women," said Judy Waxman, who worked on the study.

Can there be any base or reason why this change in insurance rates is observed with women as compared to men? aaannnnnnnyyyyy expert comment

two 'guesses'...men don't have babies nor do they have near the plumbing women have nor the problems that occur with that plumbing...only thing i can think of that might make this make sense.

well no but that is funny...course as i said women's health (i'm guessing) is more costly...as example: they have babies, NOT cheap...which also then incurs the childs medical bills, they have pap tests, mamograms, then all the problems that result from these...do you know ANY women that are let's say 60-65 that haven't had to have atleast one or two 'procedures' of some sort? I know I don't...but I know plenty of men who have NEVER had any type of procedures done...again, these are guesses on my part i can barely spell 'underwriting'

Well I think the fact is, if you are likely to make more claims, you will have to pay higher premiums. Since women use more health care service (going to the doctor, take prescription drugs, regular check ups) they are deemed more expensive than men. Hence is the difference in the cost of health care for men and women.

Agreed, that the cost of healthcare increases for women during the period of child bearing. This also put them at greater risk. Therefore, women are charged more than men of same age. However, I wonder if that's the only reason for the insurers to charge the women more?

When I think back at all my doctor visits and health problems and then look at my dear old hubbys I can kind of see why this is. Fair...well I am not so sure about that one..after all I did not as to be a woman and to have a ton of women related health issues. Lori probaly hit the best reason with the mentioning of child bearing. We also have to take a look at the after child bearing age and the complications that come with it. Something else that comes to mind is infertility. So I guess when you put some thought into it I can see why this could be.

I wonder what socialized healthcare will make of this.?

socialized health care: i am not sure how do they calculate their insurance rates but one thing is for very sure that women are getting charged extra because of the extra responsibilities they have towards the child.

but despite of that they are charged less when it comes to woman's special insurances.Need to have a special lookout from the underwriter.
