|
|
My neighbourhood's tree was over hanging on top of my house and i asked him to trim the tree. He agreed but he wanted to do himself with the help of me.
On Sunday, we did it togher but branch fell on top of my roof damaging the outside edge of the roof about 2 feet and some scratches in the middle of the roof. The middle part of side of roof does not look any damage but the out edge may need fixing.
I am not sure what do in this matter. I am worried if this would damage my roof going forward.
Should i have my insurance look at this matter?
Thanks in adavance for your advisement. _________________ Register Now to have your Insurance queries solved. |

| If you have your insurance inspect the damage, you are filing a claim. Insurance companies are not in the business of reviewing damage unless it involves a claim. How about having a roofer out who can give a free inspection and estimate? |

I'm with Tcope...it's a great mis-conception, (and frankly irritating, although I understand there is no malice)....NO adjuster will look at ANYTHING unless there is a claim filed on it...which means, there will be a claim filed against your policy if an adjuster comes out....
It also depends on your policy and it's wording, whether there would be coverage, also could come back on your neighbor...So as T suggested, it would be a good idea to get a couple of bids from roofers, see how much the damage is, if it's truly damaged, needing repair, and over your deductible...
Out of curiousity, did your neighbor offer to pay for the damage or at least some of it? _________________ "Never, never be afraid to do what's right, especially if the well being of a person or animal is at stake. I will have my local roofer come in and check the damage. Based on his estimate i will decide whether to file claim or not.
My neighbor did not offer to pay the damage yet. _________________ Register Now to have your Insurance queries solved. |

IMO that is just the right method to handle the issue. Tcope and Lori has said it right, if you want your insurance company to look at the damage it would involve a claim. And, even if it's later on agreed not to pay the claim it would still go into the record, which the insurer may make a note of at the time of renewal.

If the roof indeed needs repair then you can negotiate it with your neighbor. Does your neighbor have insurance?

Yes, my neighbor has insurance.
I will have my roofer check the damage first and get estimate. If it is minor damage and require just shingles replacement I will not go for insurance claim. It looks to me that there is no need to repair anything else except few shingles. Also, my deductible is higher and insurance may deny the claim. _________________ Register Now to have your Insurance queries solved. |

What is the deductible in your policy? If the damage comes within the deductible limit, it wouldn't make good decision to claim against the policy anyway.

They simply wouldn't have to pay anything towards the claim, but the claim would get recorded alright.
And, yeah, try to get more than one quote to compare the rates. It'd help you to get a fair idea about the cost of repair.

You don't seem to have a fear of heights seeing you were helping your neighbor cut some of the branches from the tree. I assume you were doing this from either the roof or from a ladder. I would go to the local hardware store and purchase a bail of shingles or check with new builds in the area you may be able to find spare shingles for less then a bail. Installing just a few is really easy. Most roofers are going to want to charge a minimum charge that could exceed a bail of shingles to come out even for a few shingles. The scratches to the shingles really shouldn't matter unless they are deep and expose the substrate. _________________ Can I say I’m working if I stare blankly at my computer all day? |
