We went without power for 17 day after Ike tore through Texas. I a renter with a Renter's Policy through State Farm. How do I know how much food I lost?? I had a freezer full of venison and you name it, not to mention an entire fridge??? Futhermore, they want me to break down the loss by food groups. Help????

Well Shana you have to do just that...I think it's probably easier to take a piece of paper and pen go to the grocery store and as you go up and down the isles, you got, 'yep had that in the ice box' jot it down and the price is right there in front of you...I know it's a pain in the butt, but these proof of loss forms are state required forms in many states....as to the venison, more than likely you will only be paid the processing fee...you paid to have the deer processed, so I'd just put that down as a bulk item...so sorry you suffered this loss...glad you all are ok, let us know if you have any other qustions or we can assist you in any way...

After a storm insurance companies don't ask many questions. You mention that SF wants the food broken down into groups. Are you sure they are not asking you to just write down things like, "Drinks $25, Meat $50" etc.? That is, it sounds to me light they don't want each and every individual think listed, just group things to gather and write down totals.

I had this happen abput a few years ago or so. Lightening hit and blew up my freezer. I didn't relize it until a few days later (pew wee). I had do to as Lori said. Every item, piece of meat, frozen dinner,...you name it and it had to be listed along with a value. I did exactly as Lori said and went to the grocery store. I was not digging in the rotted food so I just took a guess. I did not know however that I was entitled to the processing fee for the venison. I was told I had to just take this as a loss.

I think you should do it! Sit down, take your time and sort out what was in your freezer. That shouldn't be too hard to do if you know what you like to eat, what you eat on a daily basis for three meals and snacks, and what you normally buy at the grocery store. Good luck!

You can not imagine how bad the smell was after a few days of not knowing and really hgih temps!!! ANyway I don't imagine the poster of this question still has the food. Hurricane Ike was a bit ago.

I haven't worked HO claims for many years now, but seems to me there is a limit on this...I want to say 500.00 Tcope this ring a bell to you?

I can't even remember what my claim was but I know it was way below that. I think with freezer included it was roughly around $300. Of course back then (even though it was just a few years ago) food prices were alot cheaper.
