dish washer door seal leaked

by jack_3600 » Mon Jul 06, 2009 01:24 pm

the water leaked under the kitchen cabinets undetected, the water made its way to the dining room which is on the other side of the kitchen cabinets, it was between the rug padding and the floor, it wasnt really noticable, in time enough water caused a area saturation and when I lift the rug I saw the damage to the underlayment padding and the rug. it nees to be replaced, already bought a new seal for the dishwasher. Would the damage be covered?

Not under the auto policy, which is where this is posted.

Most property policies are going to cover the resulting water damage.

The question really depends on how long the water had been running to cause the damage. Some companies will just pay with no real investigation. Some will use the resulting damage to determine how long the water had been running under there. Mold, rot, or just warped underlayment. Sudden or long term.

Dear Jack..

See, an insurance carrier would only cover your damages that have been unforeseen and not caused due a long term negligence (which if you'd repaired in time could have avoided such damages).

Now, would you care to tell me what could have caused this 'leak'?
Is it an old one that grew bigger?

Hi Jack, when did you notice the damage? Were you not aware of the leaking door before it damaged the rug?

As far I know only accidental water damages are covered under homeowners policy and it specifically excludes damages caused by gradual seepage of water.

Thanks,
Rupert

Jack, the following wording in your post will definately hurt your chances of this damage being covered,

undetected

it wasnt really noticable

in time enough water

Most (all I've seen) HO policys say that the damage has to be 'sudden and accidental' they will further state that gradual deterioration or a water leak that is not sudden is not covered. As Dasfuk stated, some carriers will not properly investigate it, (cross your fingers  ). If it has been leaking for a period of time, then it will most likely be denied, dependent of course on the policy language. It will come down to how long it's been going on, and if you could've or should've known it was happening.

Is this wall to wall carpeting? How much is the resulting damage? Is it over your deductible? If so, by all means turn in the claim. That's the only way to know for sure. Do let us know.
