Schools

Anyone who has kids in school must know about the fundraisers they have. My beef with them is the ones that they have that singles out low income families who cannot buy all the things they are selling. That makes some kids unhappy in school. I say the only things they should be selling at school are things everyone can afford. Our school has loads of them .Only one I partake in .It is a family fun night thing, The others I just tell them NO! The problem is ,I should not have to live in misery having to deny my kids getting to do some of the extra activities they sponsor for a price. Like succor or archery.Music even cost . I say enough is enough. Only have things in school that everyone can partake in regardless of their income.

They always sell junk for inflated prices. You can go to the dollar store and buy the same thing.

Since you are on the subject of high prices, they put a lesser amount of cookies and charge you more for the girl scout cookies too, I quit buying them about three years ago.

I think a lot of these companies use kids in this aspect, If the kids did not sell the junk, they would be out of business.

August ,you are so right. They do use the kids to sell.I thought of a good idea one year to stop a lot of the selling by the kids. Have the kids sell only in school to teachers and such. Bet if they thought they had to look these kids in the face every day and turn them down for a sale they would think twice about having so many sells.

hey im with you on this best part is most schools will have the whole school selling the same thing to make the compitition better, but it affects the poor folks the worst. there should be a limit on how much they can sell per year. my daughter used to be a cheerleader in high school, they had to go get sponsers and it was to count off thier uniforms and shoes. i went to all the businesses in my area and got over what she needed and told them to give any extra to a friend who had two girls in cheering, and low income. well apparently no one else bothered to get sponsers so they told me they decided to just split the sponsers among all th girls. double rip off dont you think. then they sell wholesale stuff that is junk and make people feel bad if they dont buy from the kids. i blame the school they know better.

It is true and sad all together. Its definately hard working in extra costs to low income knowing that in the end the sport will really pay off on your childs behalf. So I guess I would suggest looking into grants to go towards the teams needs. I would go to school board meetings and express yourself on this topic because that would be the most beneficial I do believe.

They have all kinds of things in our high school but they all cost money. If they partake in them after spending the money you also have to pick them up after the activity.I would have to drive 14 miles one way and with the price of gas,I just can't do it.

These places sure would go out of business if they did not force kids to go out and sell the overpriced items that they have in their catalogs and flyers. I don't think a childs activity choice should be based on how much they can sell or how much money you have, this is almost discrimination to some point. These schools get funding to provide programs and activities, sure there is some fund raising activities involved but it should be things that can be handled at a local level, like the bake sales and car washes instead of candles and wrapping paper that is sold at an inflated price. It affects the self esteem of the child who does not sell a lot of the junk and then the kid can not participate in or is deemed an outsider or some other mean label that kids use these days. I think the fundraising efforts should be thought out again. Now the magazine companies are pushing sales on kids, it is ridiculous.

I have ALWAYS had a problem with turning children in to hawkers! It's so stupid, the poor kids are always selling something...if they (school districts) would re-exam the hugely over inflated prices they are paying for things (as an example 500 buck for a vcr times how many schools or class rooms) I personally think they would find all the money they need...It's bordering at times on blackmail in my opinion....either your kids sells this crap or they can't do this or that! it's so obnoxious...and these poor baby's coming to my door weekly wanting me to buy stuff so they can ''win'' a five dollar prize! And I have to say 'no' most of the time....

My neice (senior in highschool) and her mother were doing a fund raiser selling candles (for about 10 bucks a pop, of which they got like 1 or 2 dollars) to defray costs for a really neat trip to new york...I said, fine, but I'll give you guys 20 bucks directly screw that, the candle people getting all the money...that's the way I handle it if it's for something I want to contribute to for the child, I just contribute directly to the child or parent(such as trips and all).

Thats great Lori. I think next time I will do the same . I can remember when my youngest was so sad she could not sell enough to get a stupid cheap yoyo. The prizes toy win and sell the small amounts are crap.Once my daughter in high school was selling candy bars to go on a trip. She sold almost enough candy bars to go but then they spring it on us that we have to also pay a few hundred besides. That was after we sold their stupid candy bars. Then they turned around and billed us 2 times saying we never turned in the money after we did. We ended up paying for the candy 2 times once out of mt pocket and she still never got to go on the class trip.

Im not so sure you guys are blameing the right people i dont know how much the teachers input is but the schoolboard has to approve any sales also P.T.A and clubs decide so the teacher isnt all to blame .it comes from some parents who want to run things and want everyone elses kids to make them look good .if we just refuse to buy they might get the picture.
