Is Auto Insurance mandatory by law ?

Yes, most of the state laws allow driving only when you have insurance or when you have enough money to pay for the damage you can cause to others in an accident. A majority of the states will not allow you to register your vehicle without insurance.

What happens if I drive without having any Auto insurance policy for my car

If you drive without an auto policy in a mandatory insurance law state, your license plates will be suspended. You could also have to pay a fine. If you are caught for a traffic violation or are involved in an accident, your license plates will be canceled.

In Illinois the fines are:

  • minimum $500 fine for driving uninsured.
  • minimum $1,000 fine for driving a vehicle while the license plates are suspended for a previous insurance violation.
